How to Make a Website Look Professional

The gap between a site that looks professional and one that does not is rarely about the quality of the ideas. It is almost always consistency, restraint, and spacing. Five small decisions, done properly, will outperform any amount of decoration.

• Two fonts. One for headings, one for body, with a real contrast between them. Three or more is the most common amateur tell.
• A limited palette: one strong colour, one neutral, and two greys. Everything else should come from your content.
• Consistent spacing from a small scale — 4, 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 48. Arbitrary values are what make a page feel accidental.
• Real images rather than grey placeholders. A genuine photo changes the perceived quality of a page more than any other single change.
• Generous whitespace. The most common beginner mistake is crowding things in, when space is what makes the content easy to read.

• Read the text and see whether you can tell what the page is for within five seconds.
• Zoom to 200% and check nothing breaks or overlaps.
• View it on a real phone, on mobile data, not a fast wifi preview.
• Check every image loads, and that the page still makes sense if images fail.
• Check the contrast of text against its background, not just the colours individually.
